Dear Principal Domingues,

I am deeply saddened that while Mr. Ricardo Valencia is ready to begin teaching a Mexican American/Chican@ & Latin@ Studies course at Santa Maria High School for next year he is facing resistance.

The staff members trying to prevent Mr.Valencia’s class from happening next year claim that the Mexican American Studies course should not be allowed because it will “take away” students from other elective classes. This concern is purely based out of the interests of this select faculty rather than the students. Since when is it a bad thing for students to be excited about a course?

According to the Director of Accountability and Research of the Tuscon Unified School District, “there are positive measurable differences between Mexican American Studies students and the corresponding comparative group of students.” Mexican American Studies students score higher on standardized reading, writing, and even math tests than their peers, are more likely to graduate from high school, [and] more likely to attend college.

The staff members opposing this course do NOT share the values of the community. Although they are trying to block this course moving forward, we know that the final decision is in your hands.

Our community needs you. No matter what a few staff members say, a campus that has over 2,000 Latino students and make up 85 percent of the entire student body, at the very least deserves one course that teaches our youth about the Latino community’s contributions and struggles throughout history.

As you craft next year’s class agendas, think of the students that make Santa Maria High School and do what’s best for them. We need your courage to improve the educational success and lives of our youth. Please allow Mr.Valencia’s Mexican American/Chican@ & Latin@ Studies course to be part of next year’s curriculum.
—————-

Sincerely,

[Your name]

When I sat down to eat my lunch today while watching last night’s Daily Show, I was surprised to see a segment on the banning of Tucson’s Mexican-American Studies program. I was even more surprised to see that most of the footage in it was taken from Precious Knowledge, a documentary I edited that will be on PBS next month. It’s a funny segment–check it out!

Here is the plan….
On Sat. March 24th and Sun. March 25th

El Movimiento, Voices of Liberation, The Blackstonian and Occupy The Hood Boston is joining the efforts of the FTP Movement in its
4th Annual National Feed The People (FTP) Weekend

The mission is simple: We will spend these 2 days feeding those in need.

How will we do that?

On SATURDAY We will feed from a stationary location as a home base – Charles St. AME church 551 Warren St.

a) Beginning at 9am we will be at the Charles St. AME church preparing food and cooking.
If you are available to help please come ready to cut, chop, slice, package food, serve food, etc.

b) We will feed any needy or homeless people who come to Charles St. AME from 12 noon – 2 pm

c) All throughout the day and night we will be hand delivering meals throughout Boston to locations where there are homeless and needy people and hand deliver a plate to them. Please see video if you are confused http://youtu.be/4pXEl4AtN1k

On SUNDAY March 25

We will focus strictly on distributing food and will be hand delivering meals throughout Boston to locations where there are homeless and needy people and hand deliver a plate to them.

How can you get involved?

a) donate money or canned or non-perishable food items

b) If you cook your own dish (example: aluminum tray of mac & cheese)
please bring it to Charles St. AME between 11 am – 2 pm so we can portion it out and make plates.

c) Make deliveries: we need people with cars who are willing to drive around Boston to locations where there are homeless and needy people and hand deliver a plate to them.

Here is the Flyer…
